About

Artocarpus heterophyllus, the jackfruit, is the national fruit of Bangladesh. It is the world's largest tree-borne fruit, weighing up to 55 kg. Bangladesh has one of the highest concentrations of jackfruit cultivation globally, with the tree a common sight in homestead gardens across the country. The tree grows 9–21 m tall with a dense, evergreen canopy. Unripe jackfruit (echor) is a popular meat substitute in Bangladeshi cooking, while ripe jackfruit is eaten fresh or preserved. The seeds are nutritious and commonly eaten boiled or in curry.
